Most important things to know about the application process

1.Your main point of contact for exams for Step 1, Step 2 CK and Step 2 CS will be USMLE and the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG)

2. IMGs must pass Step 1 , Step 2 CK and Step 2 CS of the USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination) which are the same examinations taken by U.S. graduates

3. You need to take Step 1, Step 2 CK and Step 2 CS first to be ECFMG certified so you can be matched with a residency program

4. ECFMG policy requires that applicants pass all USMLE Steps ( Step 1, Step 2 CK and Step 2 CS) with a 7 year limit.

If this time limit isn’t met you would have to re-do the first exam you did.

5. All IMGs (International Medical Graduates, previously known as Foreign Medical Graduates) must have at least 4 credit years of medical school listed in IMED

6. Currently the price for each USMLE examination varies:

Step 1 $910 - plus international fees if taking it outside of the United States.

Step 2 CK $910 - plus international fees if taking it outside of the United States.

Step 2 CS $1,565 – you can only take these in the United States

More information on pricing and extension can be found here: https://www.ecfmg.org/fees/index.html

7. ECFMG certification will be issued after you pass all required exams and ECFMG verifies the supportive documents.
